SIREN, Wis. (AP) — Gov. Scott Walker is in northwestern Wisconsin Thursday afternoon, where he'll get an update on plans to keep any future wildfires in check.
A powerful wind storm last July toppled trees in six northwestern counties, encompassing more than 130,000 acres. And, with temperatures above average the potential for another wildfire is high.
Department of Natural Resources forestry and fire control staff will give Walker an overview of firefighting equipment and plans for wildfire suppression.
The Wisconsin National Guard, numerous state agencies and citizens have been working to clear the fallen timber.
A burn ban in portions of southwestern Douglas, northwestern Washburn, northern Burnett and northwestern Polk counties begins Friday. That means people won't be allowed to build campfires, smoke outside or light fireworks.
