The third annual Superior Distance Swim Challenge was held Saturday at the Superior High School pool.
The Swim Challenge is a community swimming event open to swimmers of all ages and abilities. Families, youth swimmers, triathletes, club swimmers and lap swimmers took to the pool Saturday to achieve individual distance goals, as well as for some informal competition.
Participation was up again this year, with 56 individuals competing. Events held were the one-hour tag team, individual one hour, mile and half-mile challenges.
Five records were set at this year’s event. In the one-hour swim, Amy Flessert of Superior set a record with 4,470 yards, surpassing her distance of 4400 yards in 2011. A trio of SHS swimmers — Matt Sherwood, Jake Noonan and Kaitlin Heinen — combined to form the Spartan Speed team and set a new mark in the one-hour team event, swimming 5,837.5 yards.
Noonan also set a new best time for males in the one-mile swim (24:50) and Sherwood set a record in the half-mile event (11:28). Sarah O’Conner, of Two Harbors, Minn., set the female record in the one-mile swim with a time of 27:20.
Dan Duff held the pervious one-mile record of 30:00, set in 2010, and Jeremy Miller was the previous half-mile record-holder with a time of 12:23 in 2011.
The Superior Distance Swim Challenge is a fundraiser for the Superior High School swimming and diving programs.
