All NSIC. All the time.
That’s the scenario the University of Minnesota Duluth will be facing in 2012 as all 11 games on its regular season football schedule will count in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings.
The Bulldogs, who were 11-3 overall one year ago and captured a share of their fourth consecutive NSIC championship, will launch their 80th year of intercollegiate competition on Aug. 30 in Marshall, Minn., with a Thursday night clash against Southwest Minnesota State University.
The following week (Sept. 8), UMD will put its 34-game NSIC home winning streak on the line when it hosts Winona State University in the first of six regular season outings at James S. Malosky Stadium.
Other teams who will pay visits to Duluth in 2012 include Augustana College (Sept. 22 in UMD’s annual Hall of Fame Game), Minnesota State University-Moorhead (Oct. 6), Bemidji State University (Homecoming on Oct. 20), the University of Mary (Nov. 3) and Northern State University (Nov. 10). Among the marquee road matchups for the Bulldogs is a Sept. 29 showdown with fellow 2011 league co-champion St. Cloud State University, which handed UMD one of its two NSIC losses last fall (8-2).
“I like that there is a fairly nice balance to our schedule, with six games at home and five on the road,” said Bob Nielson, the 2010 American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year who will embark on his 10th season with the Bulldogs this fall. “It will be a challenging schedule right from the get-go in that every game means something in the conference.”
Nielson and the Bulldogs open spring practice on April 9 and will hold their annual Maroon-White Game on April 27 at Malosky Stadium.
