LETTER: Mine would ruin region for future generations

In 2008, the Supreme Court gave corporations “personhood,” allowing them to contribute as much money as they want to politicians who support their dirty plans. Big business now runs our government. They are the 1 percent, the corporate greed machine.
About the Penokee-Gogebic Mine: The chief executive officer of GTAC (Gogebic Taconite LLC) paid more than $40,000 to help Walker get elected. They want this mining bill fast tracked to exempt them from existing rules and regulations, including existing environmental standards that are in place to protect you. Two senators refused it — Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, and Sen. Bob Jauch, D-Poplar. GTAC says they are dropping plans and pulling out of Wisconsin. Don’t believe them. They want us to beg them to mine. They are only posturing.
Walker says we need this mine to bring jobs to northwest Wisconsin. The truth is miners follow mines. The locals will not get the big paying jobs. This mine is about big profits.
If they want to bring jobs to the area, bring back the manufacturing jobs that big corporations sent out of the country for cheap labor and bigger profits.
The reason we do not have renewable energy or affordable efficiency cars is because it is not in the interest of these energy corporations. It would be like the pharmaceutical companies producing a cure for the cold when they profit so highly on remedies!
The corporations are aware of the environmental degradation this mine will produce. They’ll have made their millions, packed up and left before the people see the catastrophic effects to the water and land.
This proposed mine sits on the watershed for Lake Superior.
The next wars will be over clean water.
We need to preserve the water, not pollute it. This mine is a catastrophe waiting to happen.
This planet is our home. It sustains our life. The planet will recover, it always does, but to what effect to the people living downstream.
I am 58, more than halfway through my life. It is not me I worry about. We need to preserve this environment for future generations. It is unfair to destroy the environment in the name of greed.
