Police, fire departments investigate string of suspicious fires downtown

The Superior police and fire department are asking for the public’s help in the investigation of several suspicious fires in the downtown area of Superior. The most recent were four small fires discovered within two blocks of each other early Tuesday morning.

On March 20 at about 2:30 a.m., the police and fire departments responded to a fire at 1018 John Ave., an unoccupied home owned by the Superior Housing Authority and city of Superior. Upon arrival at that residence it was discovered that a garbage can was on fire inside the garage and there was another fire burning inside the residence itself. The fire department was able to extinguish both blazes.

On March 27 at about 5:30 a.m., the departments responded to a fire next door at 1022 John Ave., also unoccupied. A fire was discovered to be burning in the kitchen area of that residence, but the blaze was extinguished. This residence is also owned by the Superior Housing Authority and city of Superior.

Around 3:10 a.m. Tuesday, an officer with the Superior Police Department patrolling the 900 block of John Avenue discovered a small camper on fire next to a garage. While checking on that blaze, a small car on the opposite side of the garage was also found to be burning.

While police and firefighters were busy with those two blazes, a third small fire was observed in a truck-box style camper across the alley at the rear of 913 Hughitt Ave. Within a few minutes of that fire being discovered, another officer was walking in the area and discovered a fourth fire burning on the porch 1019 Hughitt Ave. The home was occupied.

Investigators from the police and fire departments are investigating the incidents. Citizens are asked to be observant around their neighborhoods and property.
