SHS girls second at Blue Devil track meet

Spartan boys and NHS also in action Friday night in Menomonie

The Superior High School girls track team finished second at Friday’s 2012 Blue Devil Invite, which was held at UW-Stout’s Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie. The Spartan boys finished 12th among 22 teams.

The Northwestern Tigers were also in action with the girls finishing in ninth place and the boys in 10th.

“The girls were disappointed we didn’t get first place but I told them and the whole team that second out of 21 teams is nothing to hang your head about,” SHS girls coach Phil Roe said. “We doubled the scores of Chippewa Falls, Rice Lake, Menomonie, Eau Claire Memorial and North — our key Regional opponents.”

Raya Kosey picked up 32 points for the Spartans, winning the 400, finishing second in the long jump and 200 and third in the 55.

“Raya had a monster meet, she would have won the meet’s MVP if they gave out an award,” Roe said. “Her strong showing didn’t surprise me because she has worked harder this year than in any previous year. She is on a mission to get to the state podium.”

Also for Superior, Leah Holmes won the 1,600; Dani Magdzas was fourth in the high jump; Tay Boykin was fourth in the triple jump; freshman Lauren Magnason was second in the 55 and fourth in the 200; freshman Giselle Sziron was third in the 400; Rachel Dixon was ninth in the 800; and Nicole Dzikonski ran the fastest 800 of her career with a 2:42 split in the 4x800 relay.

“Leah’s off to an incredible start. Her time of 5:24.66 is her best indoor mile during her three-year track career,” Roe said. “She sent a powerful message to the other girls in the section Friday.”

Holme’s best outdoor mile is a 5:10, which she turned in at the state meet.

“Dani is also looking a lot stronger this year and we look for her to compete at a high level all year, and Tay is working hard and we are really beginning to see her true potential as a jumper,” Roe said. “Lauren has some of the quickest feet I have seen from a ninth grader and she will just get better and better as the season goes along, and Giselle has a rare combination of strength and speed which will help her in many events this year.”

Roe also said Dixon is a great distance runner who will greatly contribute to the team this year, and Dzikonski improved her time by 20 seconds over last year, which is a credit to her work ethic.

“This was a great showing and overall team effort,” Roe said. “We look forward to working hard and having one of the best track seasons this school has seen.”

For the Tiger girls, Jordan Johnson won the 800; Tess Nelson was ninth in the 200 and second in the 55 hurdles and the 4x800 relay team finished fourth.

For the NHS boys, Ryan Lind was fourth in the 1,600; Travis Sznaider was fourth in the 3,200; Mike Naumann was third in the 55 hurdles; and the 4x800 relay team finished third.

Highlights for the Spartan boys were the 4x200 and 4x800 relay teams finishing fourth and Caleb Dushkin coming in fifth in the pole vault.
