The University of Wisconsin-Superior baseball team opened WIAC action by splitting a doubleheader with the UW-Oshkosh Titans Saturday afternoon at Tiedemann Field in Oshkosh. UWS won the opener 2-1 then lost the second game 4-3 in 11 innings.
Starting pitcher Mike Swanson improved to 2-1 for the Yellowjackets, allowing three hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 8 2/3 innings. The senior from Superior survived a bit of wildness as he hit four batters and threw two wild pitches.
Cody Johnson picked up his second save of the season by getting the final out of the game.
Oshkosh’s all-American pitcher Luke Westphal (1-3) was the losing pitcher, allowing four hits with 11 strikeouts and two wild pitches.
Remund had two of Superior’s hits. Veith added a RBI single and Tom Fairbanks had a hit.
The Yellowjackets took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Remund singled and eventually scored on Vieth’s single to left field.
Oshkosh tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning when Luke Gajewski scored on a wild pitch.
Superior took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth when Wyatt Soderquist scored on a wild pitch.
Oshkosh threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs as Swanson hit a batter and walked another. Johnson took over for Swanson and got a ground out to end the game.
In the second game, T.J. Evanson and Tom Fairbanks had two hits apiece for the Yellowjackets, who were only able to produce five hits in the game. Tyler Kamps led Oshkosh by going 2-for-5.
Superior’s Ethan Branum pitched 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked one and struck out four. Bobby Tyndall (0-1) pitched 2 2/3 innings and surrendered an unearned run on two hits in taking the loss. Yellowjacket pitchers weren’t helped by their defense in the second game UWS committed four errors.
James Lacy threw eight innings for Oshkosh, giving up three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Matt Wells came on in relief, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing one hit to pick up the victory.
UWS scored all of its runs in the fourth inning, including two on a single by Fairbanks.
UWO tied the game at 3-3 on Van Abel's two-out bunt single in the eighth inning then won the game when Guetzke scored on a passed ball.
Oshkosh was held hitless until the sixth inning.
The Yellowjackets (10-7 overall, 1-1 WIAC) and the Titans (5-8, 1-1) will play another doubleheader today starting at noon.
