This event, which starts at noon Saturday, is made possible by the “Mega Match-a-Thon” grant from the ASPCA®, will engage the community with around-the-clock activities, demonstrations, presentations and two microchip clinics. The 30-hour goal will be to match at least 100 homeless animals with loving families.
“Animal Allies is excited to be partnering with Friends of Animals and the Humane Society of Douglas County to find homes for at least 100 animals in 30 hours,” said Linda Cadotte, director of programs and operations of Animal Allies. “This is an ambitious, but possible goal with the support of the community. After all, the animals deserve us to be ambitious.”
Community members not planning to adopt are encouraged to attend. Animal Allies will be hosting a variety of fun activities, including breakfast by Duluth Grill with a special dish created for the event; a running of the Cat-tucky Derby — where friendly felines sporting jerseys race for a catnip prize; late night games with shelter animals; and agility, behavior and obedience demonstrations.
Discounted microchips for the public’s own animals will also be available both days from noon to 4 p.m.
“There will be something for everyone at this event, whether you are looking to adopt or not,” said Sarah Ojard, adoption program manager at Animal Allies. “If you are awake, there will be a way to participate.”
Many area businesses are showing their support by sponsoring the event, including: Advantage Emblem & Screen Printing, Amazing Grace Bakery and Café, Arlene Coco’s Prairie Kitchen, Bernick’s Pepsi, Bridgeman’s Ice Cream, Duluth Grill, Subway, Teatro Zuccone, Townsquare Media, Whole Foods Co-op and Yarn Harbor.
“This event will change many lives,” said Rick Sailstad, executive director of Animal Allies. “Thanks to relationships with other animal welfare organizations, local businesses and individuals in the community, Animal Allies can make miracles happen every day.”
The ASPCA® Mega Match-a-Thon runs from noon Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday at Animal Allies Humane Society’s Duluth location, 4006 Airport Road. For information or schedule of activities, visit www.animalallies.net/match.
