Four records were broken at the 2012 Track-O-Rama on March 15, and Northern Lights Elementary continued its tug-o-war dominance in the annual track and field competition between Superior’s elementary schools.
Fifth-graders from Bryant, Cathedral, Cooper, Four Corner, Great Lakes, Lake Superior and Northern Lights elementary schools competed in the Track-O-Rama event at the Lydia S. Thering Fieldhouse on the UW-Superior campus.
Three individual records and one relay record were set during the competition.
For the girls, both new records came in the sprints, with Cathedral’s Madison Sislo winning the 50-yard dash and Karle Hudacek of Four Corners winning the 100-yard dash.
Sislo becomes the first fifth-grade girl to finish the 50-yard dash in less than 7 seconds at the Track-O-Rama. Her time of 6.96 seconds topples the 2005 record of Northern Lights’ Merissa Riedinger, who finished in 7.06 seconds.
Hudacek’s time of 13.85 seconds in the 100-yard dash surpassed the 2004 time of Lake Superior’s Ayla Ranta by two-hundredths of a second.
For the boys, Antonio Mack set a new record in the 100-yard dash. The Northern Lights student finished in 13.17 seconds.
The boys also broke the 800 relay record for the second straight year. Great Lakes set the new mark, finishing in 2:12.97. The old record of 2:14.89 was set by Cooper in 2011.
In the tug-o-war, Northern Lights faced off with Lake Superior in the finals to win the event. With the victory, the fifth-graders from Northern Lights have won the tug-o-war for six straight years.
In other highlights, Conner Fonger was a double winner for Bryant, placing first in the 50-yard dash and 400-meter dash. Chloe Kintop had one first-place and two second-place finishes for the Four Corners girls, winning the 75-yard dash and finishing second in the 400-meter dash and long jump.
