During the next few weeks, there will be many opportunities to contribute to Hunger Takes No Holiday.

Each dollar donated will provide $10 worth of food, which equals five meals through the relationship we have developed with Shaye Moris, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank. Every dollar raised will be given to Second Harvest and nine different food shelves in Superior and Douglas County will benefit from your generosity. All money donated in Superior stays in Superior, and all money from my friends in the country is designated to the food shelves serving rural areas of Douglas County.

Is there a better way to help others than with the gift of hope and the ability to feed their families?

Superior Super One Food Stores are partnering with us to give their customers an opportunity to make a difference. At the registers, you are able to purchase a four-inch circular that resembles an empty plate. For $5, you can provide $50 worth of food — 25 meals — to your friends, co-workers, neighbors, and many people in need.

There is a dastardly term, “food insecure,” which means “people do not have access at all times to enough food for a healthy life.” About 5,860 people in Superior and Douglas County fall into this category with 2,360 children qualifying as “food insecure.” This is a societal problem that needs our help. By helping others, we help ourselves, and our way of life.

Hunger Takes No Holiday will have a booth at the Douglas County Fish and Game League Sports Show at Wessman Arena 5-9 p.m. tonight, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will be seminars, a kid’s fishing pond, fabulous door prizes, opportunities to buy at special show prices, boat and fishing displays, Texas barbecue, and our incredible booth.

Admission is only $7 for adults and children 12 and younger get in free. What a deal.

We will be seeking donations for Hunger Takes No Holiday. For each dollar donated, you will have the opportunity to win a $300 gift certificate to Northwest Outlet, the No. 1 outdoor sports Mecca in our area. If you donate $20, you get twenty opportunities to win. I’m just sayin’.

Bring some … buy some: That is the slogan of a unique fundraising idea from our great friends at Essentia Health in Superior. They are sponsoring a site-wide bake sale on March 30. Here’s the scoop; Bring in a dozen baked goods, cookies, cupcakes, bars, cake or bread to sell. Bring some … buy some. It helps so many people. Thanks Essentia Health for your caring and compassion.

Our next article will have a progress report and some special thanks to many people and businesses who have stepped up to the plate to help those in need in our area. If you would like to help or donate, contact me for more information at www.dleigh1273@aol.com.
