TOWN OF MELROSE, Wis. (AP) — A western Wisconsin man who lived with his malnourished animals in a barn equipped with satellite TV has been sentenced to three years of probation.
Court records say 52-year-old Tarry Smithey has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor animal mistreatment in Jackson County Circuit Court. Authorities say Smithey and his wife lived in the barn with nearly 70 animals in varying stages of neglect. A criminal complaint says the dogs, horses, mules, sheep, goats and other animals had received little or no water.
The barn had no indoor plumbing, but had a bed and a computer. The couple was ordered to clean up their property and surrender all but two mules and two dogs. The La Crosse Tribune says Renee Smithey is also charged and is scheduled in court next month.
