The Washburn Castle Gaurds, champions of the Indianhead Conference, advanced to the WIAA sectional basketball tournament at Spooner by defeating Mercer 42-39. Scott Foss led Washburn with 16 points and Gary Copperud added 11. Bob Davis was Mercer’s top shooter with 18 points. (1975)
Dan Anderson’s 24 points and rebounding prowess led the Superior Central Vikings to a 95-71 win over Cornell in the semifinals of the WIAA sectional basketball tournament in Spooner. Ross Amundson added 18 points and Tim Crowley produced 17 more for the Vikings. (1968)
The awesome Rice Lake Warriors drubbed the Superior Senior High School Spartans 68-43 in the semifinals of the WIAA Class A regional basketball tournament on the Superior floor. The 16-3 Warriors were led by Jeff Cronk, who netted 18 points, and Mike Miller, who score 14. The Warriors held Spartan high-scoring center Mitch Lindstrom to a season-low eight points, but Terry Mattson gave Superior fans something to cheer about — 12 points. The loss ended the Spartan season with a dismal 6-13 record. (1980)
The Northwestern Middle School’s seventh-grade basketball team went undefeated in 10 straight games of the current season. Team members were Kevin Johnson, Eric Reid, Todd and Mark Wick, Mike Dietz, Jody Antilla, Derek Nelson, Matt Gustafson, Chris Barrette, Bill Weyers, Matt Berg, Eric Olson, Bill Darwin, Eric Clark and Tom Garrow. They were coached by George Olson. (1985)
