ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) — A powerful winter storm has northern Wisconsinites digging out from more than a foot of snow.

A handful of school districts decided to cancel classes for a second day Thursday, including Bayfield, Florence and Butternut where 19 inches of snow fell.

Ashland County Sheriff Michael Brennan said many people followed strong recommendations against travel Wednesday, resulting in a limited number of accidents.

The Daily Press reports a building at Birdseye Veneer in Butternut partially collapsed because of the weight of the snow. There were no injuries.

The buzz of snow blowers and the sound of scraping shovels could be heard in neighborhoods around northern Wisconsin.
