Hazardous driving conditions, schools close in central, northern Wisconsin

A late winter storm has delivered more than a foot of snow to northern Wisconsin, closed dozens of schools and created treacherous driving conditions.

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — A late winter storm has delivered more than a foot of snow to northern Wisconsin, closed dozens of schools and created treacherous driving conditions.

School districts throughout central and northern Wisconsin opted to keep children at home Wednesday. The University of Wisconsin-Superior also canceled classes.

According to Wisconsin Public Service Corp., more than 13,000 customers in northern and central Wisconsin were without power as of 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for northern and central regions of the Badger State.

Temperatures in the upper 30s resulted in heavy rain in southern Wisconsin.

In Verona, Fire Chief Joseph Giver says a lightning strike ruptured a natural gas main early Wednesday morning, forcing a three-hour evacuation of a block of residents.
