After one Superior police officer got stuck in the snow on East Second Street near the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center and another called for a plow to keep other motorists from being stuck, the police department called for the closure of U.S. Highways 2 and 53 northwest of 18th Avenue East.

The area is prone to drifting in when snow mixes with high winds.

Motorists are advised to divert to East Fifth Street, a snow emergency route.

Police issued a snow emergency that started at midnight.

No parking is allowed on Hammond Avenue from North Fifth to North 28th streets or East Fifth Street from 18th to 31st Avenues East.

City and county offices are open today, but County Administrator Andy Lisak recommends calling ahead to make sure individual offices are staffed.

He said after doing a roll call of county offices, it appears most are open.

However, a planned meeting of the Jail Task Force has been canceled tonight. The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. March 28.

A public meeting scheduled for tonight at Duluth Denfield High School to discuss the upcoming Interstate 535 Blatnik Bridge rehabilitation project is canceled as well, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The meeting scheduled to take place at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Office in Superior runs 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday with a presentation at 7 p.m.

Residents have confirmed power outages in the Central Park/East End areas and in the downtown. Minnesota Power also shows outages in Allouez, South Superior and the village of Superior. Crews were working to restore power in all but the downtown area at 1 p.m. Telegram offices closed at noon because of the outage.

Power was restored in most areas by early evening.
