Meierotto takes SIRA win; racing continues Saturday

The second half of the inaugeral Superior Ice Racing Association season began Saturday at the Allouez Bay. Fans witnessed the season’s first repeat feature winner as Darin Meierotto outlasted a race long challenge from another stock car racing veteran, Rick Przybylski of Ashland.

The two traded the lead back and forth for the first 13 laps, before Meierotto made a move to the inisde and took the point, coming out of turn to take the white flag. Meierotto held off Przybylski on the final lap to take the win by .73 seconds, which has been the closest margin of victory in feature events.

The win earned Meierotto his third straight “Points on the Day” title by a mere five points over Myron Basina of Washburn. This was Basina’s second runnerup finish in as many weeks, while Przybylski, Shawn McFadden Jr. and Mike LaGrew rounded out the top five.

Those competitors were presented trophies in addition to prize money at a cermony held at Gronk’s Grill & Bar.

Racing continues Saturday with the first race slated to begin at noon. The track is located on the Allouez Bay. To get to the race site, turn North on 39th Ave. East and follow the SIRA signs. For information regarding the Superior Ice Racing Association, contact Meierotto at 715-718-1999.
