A new store is taking root at 1830 Tower Ave.

Brew or Grow combines home-brewed beer and gardening into a single do-it-yourself shop. Owner Owen Ross said the store will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and by appointment. The store’s grand opening is set for Thursday, but the doors opened a few days ago.

Ross, a Superior native, had his first taste of business ownership with Bob & Owen’s Evergreens, which opened in 2007. More recently, he worked for Amberjack Tree Service in Duluth.

“Before I was killing trees, and I think it’s time to turn things around,” Ross said.

The store features the supplies needed to brew beer at home as well as gardening equipment, supplies and plants. The new business combines the Superior man’s hobbies.

“I have a passion for roses and other plants, and beer,” he said. The shop is located in the Nottingham Building. Ross said it’s a good spot for Brew or Grow. Already, the front windows display an array of growing plants, from tomato and morning glory to cucumber and basil. People with gardening in their blood are encouraged to stop by to scratch their gardening itch.

Despite the current economy, Ross said there is a need in the area for what his store offers.

“I think that it is a wonderful climate to start the business I am starting,” he said.
