The upcoming $12 million maintenance project on the Blatnik Bridge will be a two-year project, starting in May. This summer’s work will require significant lane closures as structural gusset plates are strengthened, sandblasted and painted. Expansion joints and the old concrete railings would be replaced; lighter concrete rails would allow officials to raise the weight limit for traffic on the span.
For the first half of this year’s work, Duluth-bound lanes will be closed; for the second half, Superior-bound lanes will be shut down. Traffic will be detoured over the Bong Bridge.
Traffic disruption should be much less when the project continues in 2013 as work on the gusset plates is completed. Officials expect no detours, and only single-lane closures between about 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
When work on the Blatnik is complete, work will begin on a two-year maintenance project on the Bong Bridge starting in 2014.
Two public meetings are scheduled to discuss the upcoming maintenance work on the Blatnik Bridge:
6:30-9 p.m. today in the Duluth Denfeld High School media center; presentation at 7 p.m.
6:30-9 p.m. Thursday at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation headquarters, 1701 N. Fourth St., Superior; presentation at 7 p.m.
Staff will be at both meetings to answer questions about the work, schedule and the project’s effects on traffic.
