Spartans win season finale at Cloquet

Superior hosts Eau Claire North in playoff opener Tuesday night

The Superior High School boys basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 69-46 win at Cloquet Friday night.

The Spartans will take a 12-9 record into Tuesday’s regional game against Eau Claire North. The game begins at 7 p.m. in the SHS gym.

“It was a good game for us leading into the tournament,” SHS coach Dave Kontny said. “I thought we played well all around and it’s nice to finish second in the conference (Lake Superior Conference). Our team has come a long way and that’s what is important. We might be 12-9, but seven of those losses were to some of the best, if not the best, teams in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

“I’m very proud of my team, it was nice for all of them to play well at Cloquet. They’ve worked hard all season and have continued our tradition of togetherness. This has truly been one of my most enjoyable teams to coach and I look forward as do they to our playoff run.”

Cody Hunt led the Spartans with 19 points. They also got 12 points from Nick Mehlum, 11 from Derek Kontny, seven from Erick Tunell and Anthony Valentine, five from Jordan Hughes, three from Colton Lorenz and Spencer Urban, and two from Zach Erickson.

“We had nice balance with nine different guys scored and we played very good defense again,” Kontny said. “It was nice to see how many Superior people made the drive to Cloquet to cheer us on and our kids truly appreciate their support.

“Next is ECN on Tuesday and we will need to play well to win.”

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHJS JV won 51-44 to finish 11-10, which included winning 11 of its 16 games. Blake Raymond led the way with 17 points. … Superior’s freshmen team finished with a 21-0 record with a win 62-31. Connor Gray scored 12 points.
