Special rate helps ‘beat the heat’

Northland Spay/Neuter Clinic in Duluth is offering two programs to reduce the number of unwanted kittens this spring. During February, the clinic will spay female cats for a special rate of $20 for all Northland residents as part of a “Beat the Heat” promotion sponsored by PetSmart Charities.

“Many people don’t know that female cats can have as many as three litters a year, and kittens can breed as young as four months old,” says Dr. Amanda Bruce, veterinarian at Northland Spay/Neuter Clinic. “It’s our goal to bring female cats in before they go into heat and become pregnant.”

In addition, the clinic currently offers free cat spay/neuter services to Superior pet owners in the 54880 area code who make below $40,000 per year through a PetSmart Charities grant. The procedure includes a rabies vaccination and micro-chipping. If transportation is an issue, the clinic partners with Go Green Taxi to provide free rides for pets and their owners both to and from the clinic. Animals can also be transported on Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) buses if they are kenneled, according to Meggan Neve, a certified veterinarian technician with the clinic.
