Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem of late for the Superior High School boys hockey team, which defeated the Ashland Oredockers 11-1 Tuesday night at the Bay Area Sports Arena in Ashland.

Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem of late for the Superior High School boys hockey team, which defeated the Ashland Oredockers 11-1 Tuesday night at the Bay Area Sports Arena in Ashland.

Tuesday’s big win comes after the Spartans defeated River Falls 9-0 on Saturday at Wessman Arena.

At Ashland, Superior (12-8-1, 2-4 LSC) got two goals apiece from Caleb Dushkin and Daniel Mikel and one each from Aaron Wakefield-Zubiate, Dane Sislo, Daniel Litchke, Brady Uotinen, Luke Darwin, Nolan Holcombe and Steven Mikel.

Litchke also dished out four assists, Holcombe and Brett Bukowski had two assists each and Gerald Mikel, Steven Mikel, Uotinen, Trent Olson, Aaron Johnson and Daniel Burger had an assist apiece.

Burger’s assist was his first varsity point.

Ashland (1-18, 0-6) avoided being shut out by scoring on a breakaway goal 5:23 into the second period.

Daniel Burger assisted on Darwin’s goal for his first varsity point.

The Spartans got scoring from nine different players Saturday and Paxton Paine picked up his second shutout of the season with 10 saves in Saturday’s win over the River Falls Wildcats.

The Wildcats (5-15-1) got 30 saves from Corbin Renslow and Logan Ottarson.

The Spartans outshot the Wildcats 12-2 in the first period, but it took until the final minute to score as D. Mikel scored his second goal of the year with 53.8 seconds on the clock.

The Spartans didn’t have any problems scoring in the second period as they beat Renslow six times for a commanding 7-0 lead.

Scoring for Superior in the middle period were Uotinen, Sislo, Holcombe, Olson, Aaron Miller and Litchke.

Holcombe picked up his 100th career point with an assist on Litchke’s goal.

The Spartans completed the victory with third-period goals from Wakefield-Zubiate and Dushkin.

SPARTAN SPIN: Superior won the JV game 10-0. … The Spartans wrap up the regular season at home at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Duluth Marshall. Seniors honored prior to the game include, Aaron Johnson, Uotinen, Holcombe, Steven, Richard and Gerald Mikel, Dushkin, Blake Johnson, Brett Bukowski, Darwin, Jack Bergum and Scott Crawford. … The SHS dance team will perform Saturday night. … All youth hockey players wearing their jerseys will get into the game free. … Donations will also be collected for the “Hunger Takes No Holiday” collection. For every dollar donated, Second Harvest Food Bank will turn that into $10 of food for those in need, including the Superior food shelves.
