One killed in single-vehicle rollover near Spooner

One person was killed and four others were transported to Spooner Hospital following a single-vehicle rollover Wednesday night near Spooner.

According to a news release issued by the Wisconsin State Patrol, the incident was reported to the Washburn County Sheriff’s Department around 8:20 p.m. by a cell phone caller. It occurred on Wisconsin Highway 253 north of Rydberg Road near Spooner.

Upon arrival, responding officers found five occupants had been in the vehicle, one of whom had been ejected and fatally injured.

The remaining occupants were transported to Spooner Hospital.

Initial investigation indicates the vehicle was southbound on Highway 253 when the driver lost control and entered a steep ditch on the east side of the highway, which resulted in the vehicle rolling.

Assisting agencies included Shell Lake Police and Spooner Fire departments and North Ambulance.

All occupant information is being withheld at this time pending family notification.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
