Spartan girls take over first place in LSC

The Superior High School girls basketball team took over first place in the Lake Superior Conference with a 71-46 win at Hermantown Tuesday night.

The Spartans and Hawks entered Tuesday’s game tied for first place in the LSC with 10 points. The win improves Superior to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in league play, while Hermantown falls to 12-3 and 5-1.

“I’m really proud of the way the girls played together as a team,” said SHS coach Phil Roe. “We’ve come a long way as a team since the start of the season, but we have a lot further we’d like to go.”

Jessica Lindstrom scored 24 points to lead Superior, followed by Hailey Kontny with 20. Sammy DeMeyer added seven points; Abby Clemons had six; Allison Wainianpaa and Dani Magdzas finished with four points each; and Raya Kosey, Natalie Kintop and Kallyn Lagro chipped in with two points apiece.

“Hailey Kontny handled the ball really well and gave Hermantown problems by being aggressive and attacking the lane,” Roe said. He said Magdzas also played a key role for Superior with two quick jumpers to start the game and a pair of blocks on defense.

Kosey and DeMeyer impressed Roe with their tenacity on defense, as the Spartans forced Hermantown to commit 34 turnovers on the night.
