SHS skaters come up short against CEC

Emily Gustafson’s goal with less than two minutes left in regulation lifted Cloquet-Esko-Carlton to a 3-2 Lake Superior Conference victory over the Superior High School girls hockey team Monday night at the Superior Ice Arena.

The Spartans tied the game at 2-2 on Kailey Buhr’s unassisted scored at 14:36 in the third period. Gustafson’s game-winner came just 38 seconds later.

Carley Esse gave CEC a 1-0 lead 37 seconds into the game.

Superior tied it up 6:53 into the second period when Ari Jago scored with an assist from Kaitlyn Mergen.

The Lumberjacks regained a 2-1 lead on Kelly Carlson’s power-play goal at 14:06 of the second period.

Sarah Runser finished with 41 saves for Superior while Katie Beckman had six saves for CEC (8-9-1 overall, 3-0 LSC).

The Spartans (3-10-1, 0-3) are off until Jan. 17 when they play at Moose Lake-Willow River.
