UPDATED: Spartan and Tiger girls notch big wins

The Superior High School girls basketball team won its Lake Superior Conference opener Thursday night with an 80-50 victory over Duluth Denfeld on the road.

“It was a total team effort,” SHS coach Phil Roe said. “I was proud of my girls, they played extremely hard after a tough week in practice conditioning wise. As a team we had 24 steals. The kids where flying all over the court on defense and their hard work is paying off.

Jessica Lindstrom and Hailey Kontny led the Spartans in scoring with 24 and 19 points, respectively. Raya Kosey and Ally Gotelaere added nine points each, Samy DeMeyer and Kayleen Lagro had seven points, Dani Magdzas had three and Abby O’Shaughnessy two.

“Ally and Samy had big games,” Roe said. “Ally had three 3-pointers and played really good defense while Samy’s senior leadership really shined through. She had a good all-around game with four steals and six assists.”

Superior (2-0, 1-0) will host its home opener Tuesday against the Ashland Oredockers. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to our home opener against the Oredockers,” Roe said. “It’ll be a big-time game and we hope to have as many of our fans there as possible to fill up our gym.”

The Spartans will then travel to Proctor Thursday for an LSC match with the Rails.

SPARTAN SPIN: During halftime of Tuesday’s game the SHS dance team will compete against Hermantown. … Superior won the JV game 52-27 and the freshmen game 43-31. The SHS JV got 13 points from Emily Hansen and nine points apiece from Shannon Johnstad and Morgan Kubarek. The Spartan freshmen got 11 points from Tailor Schuster and Sydney Johnson and nine points from Elizabeth Kolanczyk.

Tiger girls win big

The Northwestern High School girls defeated Webster 75-7 Thursday night in Maple.

Webster, a Division 5 school, fell behind 26-0 after the first quarter and were never able to mount a comeback.

Leading the way for the Northwestern Tigers were Ally May with 14 points, Katie Hansen with 13 points and Alyssa Correll with 11 points.

Northwestern, 2-1, opens Heart O’ North Conference play Tuesday with an away game at Chetek.
