Superior HOF seeking nominations for 2012 classThe following is another “Have Fun or Get Out of the Way” column by award-winning Don Leighton and Mike Granlund and their alter egos, Lance Boyle and Billy Pirkola, which runs occasionally in The Superior Telegram.
Dec. 31 marks the day on our calendar of a huge, huge event. No, it is not New Year’s Eve, it’s the deadline for the acceptance of nominations for the Superior Academic and Athletic Halls of Fame. How big of a day do you want?
In 2007, under the direction of Superior High School Activities Director Ray Kosey, community members and Superior school employees, this annual event honoring the best of the best in Superior community school history was resurrected. Great athletes and academicians have been honored by being elected to these two hallowed halls for years since 1964, but not on an annual basis.
Superior has such a rich history of great athletes and those incredibly gifted and talented in the academic disciplines. These inductions are an annual reminder of how lucky we are to have had our lives enriched by those who have exhibited excellence in local athletics and academics.
With deadline nearing for the class of 2012, nominations are needed for both but particularly for the Academic Hall of Fame. While athletic exploits receive more media attention, countless awards have been earned by FBLA, DECA, Forensics, One-Act Plays, Mock Trial, Skills USA, Drama, FCCLA, and HHMUN on the state and national stages. We need to take every opportunity to honor those so deserving of helping make us Superior.
The Nomination Categories and criteria are as follows:
Alumni/Former Student Achievement: This category will recognize and honor students from Superior community schools who have displayed distinctive, unique or exceptional academic accomplishments, contributions to society or enhanced the Superior community during the time they attended a Superior community school. The individual must have attended a Superior community school for at least six semesters and must be a graduate of a Superior community high school.
Team Achievement: This award will recognize and honor academic teams that displayed distinctive, unique or exceptional academic accomplishments during the time they attended a Superior community school. A team can be made up of any number over one. Teams nominated must have completed competition a minimum of five years ago.
Community/Employee/Advisor/Volunteer Award: This award will be presented to a person, company or organization that has made positive contributions that support the academic mission of the Superior community schools.
Lifetime Achievement Award: This award will go to an inductee who is a graduate of the Superior community school and has met and demonstrated high academic standards, made substantial contributions to their community, achieved distinguished levels in a chosen profession or made exceptional contributions to mankind. This is a post-high school accomplishment.
Get on board, get involved, get off your posterior and nominate someone or some group you feel worthy of admittance into the Superior Academic and Athletic Halls of Fame.
The induction ceremony will be on March 31, 2012 at the Superior Middle School. Tickets are $40 per person for an incredible dinner and a great night of stories and acceptance speeches from some really great contributors to Superior and its history of outstanding athletics and academics.
