The Superior High School boys basketball team opened its season with a 43-41 win Saturday afternoon at Eau Claire Memorial and then a 70-25 win Tuesday night at Ashland.
“We trailed pretty much the entire game on Saturday with a couple of spurts here and there offensively,” said SHS coach Dave Kontny. “We had nice looks but couldn’t get a shot to drop most of the night, and we definitely did not shoot free throws well.
“I think a lot of it was that we were young. The game was tight all night; it was a kind of inner pressure young players feel early in the season, and Memorial had two games already under their belt.”
The host Old Abes led 9-6 after one quarter, 18-16 at the half and 30-29 after three quarters.
The Spartans pulled off the come-from-behind victory by outscoring ECM 14-11 in the fourth quarter.
“The key for us was our pressure,” Kontny said. “We created a ton of turnovers, and we got some second chances on some great hustle from everyone. We were everywhere on defense, and that was a concern of mine coming in to the game, but the kids showed me they want to play hard and that’s great.”
Erick Tunell led the Spartans with a game-high 17 points. Ben Erickson was next with eight points and Spencer Urban had five.
Colin Loshaw scored 14 points for the Abes, who fall to 0-3 on the season.
The Spartans host Minneapolis Southwest at 3 p.m. Saturday.
