Daniel E. Collins, 77, of Iron River passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at his home.
Dan was born May 30, 1934, in Saint Paul, Minn., the son of Daniel C. and Vivian (Ahern) Collins.
He attended Saint Mary’s of the Lake Grade School in White Bear Lake, Minn., he then attended Cretin High School in St. Paul, Minn., and graduated in 1953, after which he attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany as a dog handler and cook from 1954 to 1962. On Sept 9, 1961, he was united in marriage to Karen M. Peterson in Superior. He owned and operated the Country Closet in Iron River as well as being a handy man and cabin caretaker. He also worked at Tester Corp. and Brule Corp., before which he was the manager of the Holiday Station Store, Kroger Foods and Warner Hardware. He enjoyed reading, traveling, general handy man jobs, boating, camping with family, cooking and spending time with his wife, Karen and his children and grandchildren. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Iron River, where he was a prayer leader, lector and Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Iron River Foundation, the Iron River Lakes Association, the Lions Club, the American Legion and the Iron River Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Karen of Iron River; children, Daniel M. (Ann) of Darboy, Wis., Patrick T. (Tambrey) of Duluth, Joseph V. (Colleen) of Two Rivers, Wis., and Mary Lou T. (Donald) Griffith of Superior; eight grandchildren, Nathan Collins, Michele Collins, Brennen Collins, Reid Collins, Paige Collins, Chase Collins, Logan Griffith and Kalen Griffith; three sisters, Patricia (Richard) Bies of Breezy Point, Minn., Margaret (Peg) Likar of Duluth and Jeanne (Donald) McNeally of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; one aunt, Verna Ahern Shreves of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial Mass for Dan will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov 25 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Iron River with the Rev. Michael Crisp as celebrant.
A gathering of family and friends will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday at the church in Iron River and continue until the hour of service.
Interment will take place in St. Michael Cemetery, Iron River, WI.
