A pair of University of Wisconsin-Superior seniors has been honored by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as the men’s soccer Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week. Forward Eric Nilsen (Duluth) and defender Dan Warnke (Burnsville, Minn.) have taken home the final weekly awards of the season from the conference.
It’s the second time this season that Nilsen has received the honor for top offensive player, while Warnke is being recognized for the first time for his defensive exploits. All four Yellowjacket seniors have received a weekly award from the WIAC at least once this season.
“I’m really happy for them. They played a great game last week in their final game when they could have just as easily gone through the motions,” UWS coach Joe Mooney said.
Nilsen scored the first two goals in last Wednesday’s 7-0 win at Finlandia. Warnke assisted on Nilsen’s second goal, as well as the third goal of the day scored by Thomas Shuldheisz before adding a goal himself in the closing minutes.
Nilsen finished the season as the team leader in goals (8) and tied for the team lead in points (21).
Warnke finished with career highs in goals (5), assists (5) and points (15), all the while being a force for the team defensively.
