Spartans swim past Proctor-Hermantown

The Superior High School girls swimming and diving team still has hopes of claiming a Lake Superior Conference title thanks to a 50-44 victory over Proctor-Hermantown Thursday evening at Proctor.

“They beat us earlier in the year, and we avenged it,” said SHS coach George Lehman.

Superior and Proctor are now tied in the conference standings. Lehman said according to league bylaws, the winner of the conference title will be determined at the LSC Championships, scheduled for Oct. 29 at SHS.

“They’ve got more depth than us, but you never know,” Lehman said.

At Thursday’s meet, Superior won seven of 11 events. Freshman Kaitlin Heinen set a new school record in winning the 500 freestyle and also set a new pool record at Proctor. She also won the individual medley and swam on Superior’s winning 160 medley and 480 freestyle relay teams. Kelsey Hansen won the 60 freestyle and 100 freestyle and was a member of the winning 160 freestyle relay team.
