Wisconsin unemployment rate holds steady

Wisconsin's unemployment rate is holding steady. The state Department of Workforce Development reported Thursday that the unemployment rate for September was 7.8 percent. That is down slightly from 7.9 percent in August.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin's unemployment rate is holding steady.

The state Department of Workforce Development reported Thursday that the unemployment rate for September was 7.8 percent. That is down slightly from 7.9 percent in August.

The department reported that private sector employment was essentially flat. There was a net loss of 900 jobs. However, there was a loss of 11,500 government jobs.

The biggest jump in jobs was in the manufacturing sector, which saw an increase of 12,700 last month.

The national unemployment rate for September was 9.1 percent.

The numbers come as Gov. Scott Walker is urging the Legislature to take action on a number of bills he says will improve the state's business climate and lead to job creation. Democrats say the measure fall short of that promise.
