SPARTAN RDP: Spartans swim past Lumberjacks

Cross country, boys soccer and volleyball were also in action Thursday night

The Superior High School girls swimming and diving team defeated Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 93-74 Thursday evening in the SHS pool.

The Spartans won 10 of 12 events.

Individual winners were Grace Elonen, 200 free; Tori Johnson, 200-yard individual medley and 500 free; Kaitlin Heinen, 50 free; Karrigan Grimstad, diving; Kesley Hansen, 100 backstroke; and Nicole Hansen, 100 breaststroke.

Superior also won three relays, the 200 medley (Kaitlin Heinen, Nicole Hansen, Kelsey Hansen and Kacie Heinen); the 200 free relay (Kelsey Hansen, Elonen, Kaitlin Heinen and Johnson) and 400 free relay (Kacie Heinen, Kjersten Lisak, Kaitlin Sanders and Elonen).

“The meet was close until we went 1-2 in the 500 free and 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke,” SHS coach George Lehman said.

The Spartans are back in action with the Duluth East Greyhound Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Morgan Park Pool.

Cross country

The Spartan boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Hibbing Rotary Cross Country Meet Thursday, with the Superior girls placing second as a team and the boys placing fifth.

Superior junior Leah Holmes won the girls race in 15:18.6, coming in almost a full minute ahead of the second-place finisher.

For the Spartan boys, Evan Walpole finished in third, six seconds behind first-place Ryan Davis of Duluth East.

Boys soccer

The Spartans lost to Duluth Denfeld 4-2 Tuesday night at Public Schools Stadium.

Connor Andreson and Bryan Wines (penalty kick) scored for the Spartans.

Superior wrapped up its regular season Thursday night with a 2-1 loss at Ashland.

The Spartans received the No. 15 seed for the upcoming WIAA tournament and will play at No. 2 seed Chippewa Falls at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Volleyball

The Spartans came up short Thursday night at Duluth East losing to the Greyhounds 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22) in a non-conference match.

For the Spartans, Ali Wainionpaa had 30 set assists and nine digs; Dani Magdzas had 13 kills and two blocks; Jessica Lindstrom had 12 kills, two block and 11 digs; Ally Keute had five kills and 10 digs; Taylor Johnson had two blocks and 15 digs; and Maddie Keute chipped in with 10 digs.

For East, Elena Lushine had 21 kills and three blocks; Sadie Kunst had nine kills, 15 digs and three ace serves; Cassie Chruscielski had nine kills, 13 digs and two ace services; Faye Lafferty had 23 digs and Amanda Stromback had 41 set assists.

The Spartans, now 19-5-1 on the season, hosts Hermantown at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
