Bong Center hosts author of ‘US Coast Guard in World War II’

The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center will host author Tom Ostrom discussing his book “The United States Coast Guard in World War II: a History of Domestic and Overseas Actions” at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center will host author Tom Ostrom discussing his book “The United States Coast Guard in World War II: a History of Domestic and Overseas Actions” at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Ostrom is a University of Wisconsin-Superior alumnus who served in the US Coast Guard Reserve from 1961 to 1965. He has taught at the junior and senior high levels in Wisconsin, at Southwest Missouri College and at Rochester Community College in Minnesota from which he retired. In addition to this book he has also written “The United States Coast Guard: 1790 to the Present and The United States Coast Guard on the Great Lakes: a History.”

In addition, Ostrom’s new book, “The United State Coast Guard in National Defense: From World War I to the Present” is due out in 2012.

The mission of the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center is to honor the memory of Maj. Bong and all the veterans of WWII and later conflicts whose sacrifices maintain our freedoms. The center is an educational resource that collects and preserves the tangible legacy of these veterans and their home front supporters.

The center perpetuates their ideals, principles, and leadership skills for today as well as future generations. This program is free and open to the public. The center’s exhibition galleries will be open for tours at regular admission prices.
