UWS soccer teams to host ‘Caps for Cancer’
‘Reunion Weekend’ includes Hall of Fame banquet; softball fundraiser, golf tournament and alumni baseball game
The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s and women’s soccer teams will hold the “Caps for Cancer” doubleheader today at the Superior High School soccer complex.
The Yellowjackets ask that fans come to the games with new winter hats for men, women and children that will be donated to the Caring Ways Cancer Resource Center, which is funded by the Miller-Dwan Foundation and is located in the Essentia Health Cancer Center.
Hats will then be given to people in the Twin Ports, Ashland and surrounding areas that have lost their hair due to cancer treatment.
The UWS men and women host Finlandia University at 2 and 4 p.m.
Reunion weekend
UWS will also host “Reunion Weekend” with a number of event scheduled. All of the events are open to the public.
Festivities begin with the second annual Beer & Wine Showcase 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Barker’s Island Inn. The event is a fundraiser for the UWS softball team. The cost is $25 in advance or $30 at the door.
The hall of fame golf outing will be held at Nemadji Golf Course on Friday. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with teams teeing off at noon. The cost is $30 for nine holes and $60 for 18 holes. Fees include, golf, cart and a meal.
Following golf, the National “S” Club will be sponsoring a barbeque at Wessman Arena at 7 p.m. The event is all you can eat and drink for only $20. The public is invited and local alumni are encouraged to attend.
Also on Friday evening the Yellowjacket baseball team will be holding its annual awards banquet as part of its Black and Gold Weekend. The banquet begins at 6 p.m. at Barker’s Island Inn. The baseball team will then play its annual alumni game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ted Whereatt Field. The game features alumni versus the current squad. There is no cost to attend the game.
The UWS women’s soccer team will host Mount Mary University at 3 p.m. Saturday the Superior High School Soccer Complex. Admission is free.
The 2011 UWS Hall of Fame Induction will be Saturday night at Barkers Island Inn. The social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. and the program beginning at 7 p.m. The cost is $40 in advance and $50 at the door.
Also at 7 p.m., the Yellowjacket men’s soccer team will play Bethel University at Public School Stadium in Duluth. Admission is free.

Men’s soccer
The UWS men’s soccer team pulled off a 2-1 win at UW-Platteville Sunday.
The Pioneers (4-3-1, 1-2 WIAC) got on the board first when senior Anthony Heller scored in the 19th minute.
The Yellowjackets (6-2, 1-1 WIAC) controlled possession for most of the contest after the UWP goal. The ’Jackets broke free on their first shot of the second half when Eric Nilsen took a quick pass from Alex Young in the 65th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Four minutes Alberto Rivero hit the cross bar in the 79th minute, Logan George took on a pair of Pioneer defenders as a foul was called on UWP.
The foul occurred inside the penalty box to set up a penalty kick attempt for George.
On the penalty kick attempt, George went left and the Pioneer goalkeeper went the other way for the go-ahead goal.
Volleyball
The Yellowjackets spikers lost 3-0 Friday night at UW-Whitewater and 3-0 Saturday afternoon at UW-Stevens Point.
Saturday’s loss was the third straight defeat for UWS, which had Keely Deadrick lead the team in assists and digs.
During Friday’s match, sophomore Kitty Tynen led the ’Jackets with seven kills and 13 digs while Deadrick had 20 set assists.
Women’s Soccer
The ’Jackets responded to a 6-0 loss at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Northland International at home on Monday.
The win is the fourth of the year for the Yellowjackets (4-5, 0-3), marking the first time they’ve hit that mark since they won seven matches in 2007.
Chelsea Cossin finished with a pair of goals and Nichole Casler had a goal and an assist to lead the Yellowjackets.
Sarah Johnson scored her second goal of the year at 28:06 of the first half and minutes later Casler made it 3-0. Mandee Akason had the assist. Cossin also scored in the second half.
Alexandra Paige picked up her third win of the season and second shutout by making two saves.
Cross Country
The UWS men placed sixth out of eight teams at the No-Limit Invitational hosted by St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn.
Duluth’s Josh Ensign, a freshman, was the top finisher among all Yellowjacket runners finished 39th with a time of 30:29.70.
In the next 28 slots, separated by a mere two minutes, eight more Yellowjackets came across the finish line, led by another freshman, Andy Kast (Andover, Minn.), who finished just 11 seconds behind Ensign, in 42nd.
Despite a seventh-place finish in the second event of the year, every member of the UWS women’s team improved on her time from the year’s first race.
Kristin Jasperson was the top UWS women with a time 25:02.70, good for 22nd place. Jasperson finished 1:24 behind the winner and was followed by teammate Christina Micheletti, who was 29th with a time of 25:22.10.
