The Northwood-Solon Springs football team has officially qualified for the WIAA Division 7 playoffs for the fourth straight year.
The Evergreens defeated Birchwood 48-12 Friday night in Minong to move to 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the Small Lakeland Conference.
Northwood-Solon Springs scored 20 points in both the first and second quarter and eight points in the third quarter. Birchwood scored both of its touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
For the night, the Evergreens had 538 yards of total offense, and Birchwood had 116.
Leading the way for Northwood-Solon Springs was Josh Malone, who had four touchdowns. He finished with 170 yards rushing on just eight carries. Quarterback Phil Larson had 126 yards on 12 carries with one touchdown and was 3-for-8 passing for 27 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Nick Murray also surpassed 100 yards on the ground on just six carries and scored a TD for the Evergreens, while Tyler Long had 55 yards rushing and one touchdown.
On defense, Malone had eight tackles and one sack. Trevor Lafave finished with 3½ tackles and one sack, and Mac Ohm and Murray both added two tackles and one interception apiece.
Elsewhere in Small Lakeland Conference play, Frederic (5-1, 5-0) shut out Shell Lake 35-0 Friday.
The Vikings now need to win just two of their last three conference games to assure themselves at least a share of the Small Lakeland Conference title. Frederic finishes out its schedule playing Birchwood (0-5, 0-5), Luck (3-3, 3-3) and Siren (4-2, 3-2).
The Evergreens host Turtle Lake this Friday for homecoming and then travel to Siren on Oct. 7 to wrap up their conference schedule. Northwood-Solon Springs ends the regular season with a non-conference game against Washburn.
