The Hayward Hurricanes girls golf team wrapped up an undefeated regular season with a first-place finish at the Heart O’ North Conference championships on a wet and cold Wednesday at Rolling Oaks Golf Course in Barron.
Spooner finished second, the Superior High School Spartans were third and the Northwestern Tigers were fifth.
Avery Steen of Luck/Unity was the HON individual champion for the season. She was joined on the HON All-Conference team by Superior’s Alison Gotelaere and Anne Tracy and Northwestern’s Gwen LaPole.
Also earning all-conference honors were Brittany Neff, Emilee McCusker and Jenny Xu of Hayward; Haley Seifert of Ladysmith; and Erin Winesburg and Kyra Schmock of Spooner.
Neff’s 77 was good for medalist honors on Wednesday. Tracy finished in fifth place with an 86, and Gotelaere tied for sixth with an 89.
“Anne was on fire on the front, belting out a 39, but she stumbled a bit on the back side firing a 47,” said SHS coach Jason Kalin. “It was just the opposite with Ally, who got off to a slow start with a 47 but then regrouped to shoot a 42 on the back.”
Other scores for Superior were: Kali O’Neill, 109, Allie Schober, 108 and Alisha Morgan, 122.
“One of the highlights of the day was having Kali and Allie shoot their best scores of the year on such a tough day,” Kalin said. “I was very impressed with how all of the girls handled the adversity and pressure of the day.”
LaPole led Northwestern with a 95. Abby Schulz was next at 102, followed by Kayla Janowicz, 111; Molly Lattery, 115; and Reggie Semanko, 118.
On Monday, the Tiger girls golf team shot a team score of 211 at Ladysmith to earn conference victories over Ladysmith and Luck.
Leading the Tigers to their 13th and 14th conference victories were Lapole, who shot a 46; Schulz, 53; Lattery, 54; and Semanko and Janowicz, 58s. Janowicz’s score was used as the tiebreaker for the match against Ladysmith.
Up next for Northwestern is WIAA regional action at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Whispering Pines in Cadott.
The Spartans’ regional tournament is a 9 a.m. Wednesday at Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake.
The first four teams and top four individuals, who are not members of one of the top four teams, will advance to sectionals.
“I’m very proud of Alison and Anne both for their accomplishments, but we have some unfinished business as we move into the playoffs,” Kalin said. “If all girls continue to play like this we may have an outside shot at moving on to sectionals as a team.”
