Evergreens rebound with 28-0 win at Bruce

The Evergreens piled up 412 yards of total offense while holding Bruce to just 91 yards — 56 rushing and 35 passing.

The Northwood-Solon Springs football team rebounded from its season-opening loss to Frederic with a 28-0 shutout over Bruce on Friday.

“Our kids met our team goals this week offensively and defensively,” said Brian Trettin, Evergreens head coach. “That, as a coach, is a good feeling.”

Northwood-Solon Springs scored its first touchdown in the second quarter on a 55-yard run from senior Josh Malone. Quarterback Phil Larson then made it 14-0 for the Evergreens when he found Brian Flamang on a 7-yard pass.

In the third quarter, Tyler Long scampered in from 5 yards out; and Malone finished off the scoring in the fourth quarter with another long run going 40 yards for the touchdown.

For the game, Malone had 166 yards rushing. Long rushed for 76 yards, Nick Murray and Larson both finished with 44 yards, Eric Olson had 25 yards and Chris Olson had 20 yards.

Larson was 3-for-5 passing for 37 yards and one touchdown. Catching one pass apiece were Chris Olson, Mac Ohm and Flamang.

Malone and Long were also leaders on defense. Both finished with eight tackles, and Malone also had two sacks. Gage Harwick and Mac Ohom also added one sack apiece for the Evergreens, Brian Flamang finished with seven tackles, Erik Olson had an interception and Leo Alcantar had six tackles and forced a fumble.

“Our kids are starting to really come together as one unit,” Trettin said. “I really like to see our enthusiasm and how physical we played.

“Our number one goal is to fix the mistakes we made and get ready to play a tough and physical Luck team this week,” Trettin continued. “It will be important to have a great week of practice and play well in front of our home crowd.”

The Evergreens host Luck at 7 p.m. Friday at Northwood School.

NOTES: It was a lopsided week overall in the Small Lakeland Conference. Northwood-Solon Springs, Turtle Lake, Shell Lake and Siren all earned shutout wins in week two, while Frederic topped Winter 64-34. The average margin of victory in conference play was more than 30 points.
