The Northwood-Solon Springs Evergreens opened their season Friday with a 21-12 loss at Frederic.
After a scoreless first quarter, Frederic got into the end zone twice in the second to take a 14-0 lead at halftime. The Evergreens made up one touchdown in the third quarter and then pulled within two points early in the fourth quarter, but Frederic sealed its victory with one final touchdown to win 21-12.
“Our kids showed a lot of character, being down 14, coming back and making it 14-12,” Evergreens coach Brian Trettin said. “We just needed to land the last punch to win this one.”
Scoring for Northwood in the second quarter was Tyler Long, who ran the ball in from 30 yards. In the third quarter, quarterback Phil Larson scampered in from 5 yards out, but a failed two-point conversion left the Evergreens trailing 14-12.
Larson led the team in rushing with 73 yards, followed by Josh Malone with 49 yards. Long added 40 yards, Nick Murray had 14 and Brandon Wilcox 2.
Larson was also 1-4 passing for 19 yards.
On defense, Gage Harwick and Malone both had nine tackles. Malone also had a sack and forced a fumble. Long added seven tackles and Brian Flamang had a fumble recovery.
“Our kids learned a lot about themselves,” Trettin said. “This is a great group of kids that really figured out our system in the second half. I know they will carry over what they learned from this game to our game with Bruce.”
