Kosey finishes first at Osceola Invitational

The Superior High School girls tennis team began its season by participating in the Osceola Invitational on Wednesday and then hosting Rice Lake Thursday.

Spartan senior Raya Kosey finished in first place at No. 2 singles in Osceola by winning all three of her matches.

The duo of Jessica Engstrom and Carissa Welch lost their first match but then rebounded with three straight wins to finish fifth in the doubles No. 2 flight.

Sara Olson and Cassie Hanson also finished in fifth place, winning two matches and losing one at No. 3 doubles.

At No. 4 singles, Brianna Homich won her first match, but then lost to Sierra Thomfohrda of Unity.

As a team the Spartans lost to Rice Lake 4-3 Thursday evening at the SHS courts.

Notching wins for SHS were Natalie Berger and Kosey, at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, and Olson and Hanson at No. 2 doubles.

The Spartans are back in action at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at Cloquet. They return home to host Ashland on Aug. 29.
