WYALUSING TOWNSHIP, Wis. (AP) — Authorities in southwestern Wisconsin say a man has drowned at a beach after he went into the water to help some struggling relatives.
The Grant County sheriff's department says the man was 32-year-old David Slabaugh of Prairie du Chien.
Deputies say Slabaugh was at Wyalusing Beach on Friday afternoon with his family. Several of his family members were in the water when they began to drift out in the current and struggled to get to shore.
Slabaugh entered the water to help them but went under water and didn't resurface. His family members were able to get back to shore safely.
Authorities found Slabaugh's body in the water later in the evening. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
