Dane Moreland wins Pat Moreland 5K; Jordan Johnson makes it 3-for-3

Dane Moreland, former All-American runner at Minnesota-Moorhead, won the 3rd Annual Pat Moreland 5K Saturday at Northwestern High School with a record time of 15:17.

Finishing behind Morreland were Ryan Lind and Travis Sznaider.

Moreland broke the previous record set by his brother, Kels, who was the winner of the event the first two years, but did not compete this year.

The Moreland brothers are the grandsons of the race’s namesake Pat Moreland, who was on hand for the festivities.

Jordan Johnson made it a “three-peat” in the Women’s division, finishing with a time of 19:11 to edge out local luminaries Kathleen (Duffy) Beiswenger and Sarah Anderson to remain the only women’s winner in the event’s three years.

One-year-old Reagan Scherz won the female race in a “grandma-aided” time of 24:18 while Gus Kern was the first 1-year-old boy to cross the finish line in 47:32.

A total of 82 runners participated in the 5K with about 35 more entered in the Mini Track Meet and kids’ games.

Alex Smith of Solon Springs and Gemma Lehto of Duluth won new bikes as part of the event.

The race is hosted by the Gordon L. Nelson Athletic Complex Association as a fundraiser for the athletic facilities of the district and honors longtime teacher and runner Pat Moreland of Lake Nebagamon.
