The Northwood Evergreens are one win away from the WIAA state softball tournament after defeating Shell Lake 14-11 Tuesday evening in Shell Lake.
Standing in the way of a state tournament berth for Northwood is Chippewa Falls’ McDonell Central, which defeated Thorp 18-4 in five innings.
The sectional championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Chippewa Falls.
During Tuesday’s game, the Evergreens struggled with high heat. At game time in Shell Lake, the temperature read 100 degrees.
“It was miserable,” said Beth Block, Northwood head coach. “And of course we have all-black uniforms on.”
Two players had to come out of the game because of the heat.
Teagen Harings was the winning pitcher for the Evergreens, giving up eight hits while walking two and striking out seven.
Northwood had 16 hits for the game, with Annie Block and Harings getting three apiece. Ashley Block, Nicole Block and Sara Radzak had two hits each.
