Moreland 5K, Mini Track meet is June 11

The third annual Pat Moreland 5K and Mini-Track Meet is scheduled for Saturday, June 11 at the Northwestern High School track in Maple.

The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. and the mini track meet will begin at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is $12 per runner if pre-registered, or $15 on race day. A family rate is also available. Race day registration will be from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m.

Each participant will receive a commemorative Pat Moreland 5K/Mini Track Meet T-shirt. Kids in the mini track meet will get medals and will have a chance to win one of two bikes to be given away, courtesy of Olson Brothers Contractors of Brule. There will also be kids games. Entry fee is good for both events.

The races are fundraisers for the facilities at the Gordon L. Nelson Athletic Complex at Northwestern High School and honor Lake Nebagamon’s running legend Pat Moreland, a longtime educator in the Maple School District and storied runner.

Moreland has run every day since Dec. 10, 1987, and has competed in the 26-mile Boston Marathon three times, in addition to marathons in Duluth, Hurley, Disney World, Las Vegas, Chicago, Portland, Appleton, Los Angeles, Portland and Eagle River.

Two-time defending overall men’s champion Kels Moreland is expected to defend his title but may face stiff competition from former Minnesota-Moorhead Division II All-American Dane Moreland. The brothers are grandsons of Pat and Leona Moreland.

The two-time defending champion in the women’s race, Northwestern High School sophomore Jordan Johnson, is expected to defend her title and is competing this week in the WIAA State Track Meet.

There will be awards for both men’s and women’s divisions with numerous age groups.
