The Northwood School softball team is headed to the sectional tournament.
The Evergreens defeated Drummond 6-5 Thursday afternoon in a regional final game in Minong, scoring the winning run on a passed ball in the seventh inning.
“Our girls never gave up,” said Evergreens coach Beth Block. “They worked hard and whittled away to tie the game.”
Northwood led 3-0 heading into the fifth inning, but a combination of walks, hits and four errors put Drummond up 5-3.
The Evergreens then came back in the bottom of the fifth with three straight hits to tie the game at 5-5.
Morgan Block was the first to get on base, hitting a double to left field with two outs. Sara Radzak followed with an RBI single, and Marisa Blegen drove in the tying run with a double up the middle.
In the seventh inning, Drummond threatened to reclaim the lead with one out and the bases loaded. Drummond hit a shot toward left field, but shortstop Ashley Block was there to track it down.
“With Nicole Block playing deep (in left field), Ashley Block turned hard on a fly ball to make a tremendous catch and throw the runner out at second to end the inning,” Beth Block said.
Morgan Block then scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when she tripled with two outs and crossed home plate on a passed ball.
Teagen Harings was the winning pitcher for the Evergreen, going seven innings. She struck out nine while walking one and allowing five hits.
The Evergreens had six hits for the game, two from Morgan Block and one apiece from Harings, Radzak, Blegen and Jessie Wells.
Northwood next plays in a sectional game at Shell Lake at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Shell Lake advanced to the sectional round with a 4-2 victory over Frederic Thursday.
