Man killed by train in Ixonia

JEFFERSON, Wis. (AP) — Jefferson County authorities say a 24-year-old man has apparently been struck and killed by a train in the town of Ixonia (iks-ZOHN-ee-ah).

The county sheriff's office says deputies got the call about 9 a.m. Sunday and responded to some railroad tracks along Highway 16, where they found Michael S. Schmidt.

Schmidt had severe head and leg trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene by officials from the coroner's office. His hometown was not immediately released.

A witness saw a lone figure walking along the tracks about 30 minutes before the call. An employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway reported seeing an object next to the track, but they couldn't stop the train before Schmidt was struck.
