NHS softball team wins playoff opener
Up next for Tigers is the Ashland Oredockers
The Northwestern Tigers softball team defeated the Hayward Hurricanes 9-7 in a WIAA playoff regional game Thursday evening in Brule.
The Tigers (10-10) will next play the winner of the Webster-Siren and Ashland winner on Tuesday.
After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers broke into the scoring column in second when Aliex Friend hit a two-run double and Kelcee Janigo hit an RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
Northwestern add two more in the third before Hayward came back to take the lead a 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
The Tigers tied the game 6-6 thanks to a bases-loaded walk. Northwestern scored two more in the bottom of the fifth to lead 8-6.
Hayward made a late run scoring one in the top of the seventh, but relief pitcher Liz Urbaniak held on to win the game for the Tigers.
Alie Larson and Shelby Schultz had three hits apiece for the Tigers.
Schultz also scored two runs, while Tiana Arseneau, Janigo and Urbaniak added two hits apiece and Amber Eller singled.
Softball
Hurley pushed across a run in the first inning without a hit and plated three more on three hits in the third. That gave the Midgettes a four-run lead and they made it stand up as they defeated Northwestern 4-2 Tuesday in Hurley.
