Saturday’s U.S. Postal Service Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive netted more than 30,000 pounds of non-perishable food items from Superior and Brule for local charities.

Lynette Erickson, food drive coordinator for branch 337, said this year donations appear to be higher than years past. Some residents donated a single can, while one resident gave six full bags of groceries. Pictured is Brent Olson, a 14-year postal carrier, picking up bags on East Sixth Street Saturday afternoon. At least 50 bags fit into the little white truck, mixed with mail. With help from his wife Tara and his daughter, who drove ahead of her husband picking up the bags, they were able to fill his postal truck three times.

Bags left on the curbs and doorsteps were also picked up by countless retired postal carriers and brought back to the the US Postal loading dock on Belknap Street, where they were weighed and prepped for distribution to three local food shelves.
