SHS baseball team sweeps Ashland; softball team splits at Hibbing

Spartans host Cloquet at 4:30 p.m. Monday

The Superior High School baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Ashland Oredockers Friday night at Morrie Arnovich Field.

The Spartans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opener 2-1, then got a four-hit shutout from Ryan Myhre in a 5-0 victory in game two.

Grant Rindal was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing four hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks. Mark Arbuckle was tagged with the loss, allowing five hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.

With the score tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Dylan Ramage and Zach Magdzas started the winning rally with singles. One batter later Ramage scored the winning run when Trent Olson laid down a sacrifice bunt and the ball was thrown into left field.

Ashland’s run came in the third inning when Brett Hulmer walked and eventually scored on Willy Westerman’s double.

Superior tied it up in the bottom of the third when Trent Olson singled and scored on Taylor Olson’s bases-loaded walk.

Superior had five hits. Magdzas doubled and singled; Paul Edwards doubled; and Trent Olson and Ramage singled.

For Ashland, Westerman was 2-for-2 with an RBI; Kasten Gleesen had a bunt single; and Alex Doherty and Ben Henry singled.

Ryan Myhre was the winning pitcher in the second game, tossing a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts, two walks and a hit batter.

Dan Kollauf and Josh Smith pitched for Ashland, allowing three hits with eight walks and four strikeouts.

Superior scored all the runs it needed in the fourth inning as Rob Dembroski walked and eventually scored on an error off bat of Ramage; Nik Mattson hit an RBI double and Spencer Severson knocked in a run with a single.

In the fifth inning Magdzas walked, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch. The Spartans’ final run came when Nick Sitek beat out a grounder for an infield single, which allowed Dembroski to score,

Superior had three hits, Mattson’s RBI double, Severson’s RBI single and a single by Marty Manion.

For Ashland, Arbuckle was 2-for-3 and Westerman and Josh Smith singled.

Superior improves to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in Lake Superior Conference, while Ashland falls to 2-8, 0-4.

The Spartans host Cloquet at 4:30 p.m. Monday and play a doubleheader at Grand Rapids at 4 p.m. Tuesday. They will also play in the Hibbing Wood Bat Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Spartan Softball

The Spartan softball team went 1-1 in Friday’s Hibbing Tournament, losing to Eveleth 8-5 and defeating Hibbing 10-7.

Against Eveleth, Alison Wainionpaa and Taylor Thompson shared mound duties, allowing six hits with two strikeouts and six walks.

Offensively, Juliana Polson was 2-for-3 and Cassy O’Neill hit a two-run triple.

In the consolation game, Wainionpaa was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits with one strikeout and eight walks.

Emily Hansen had two hits and scored two runs; Wainionpaa had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run; Taylor Johnson had a single and two RBIs; and Kari Miller, O’Neill, Jessica Lindstrom and Kaitlyn Mergen singled.

Superior is at Grand Rapids Monday and Duluth Central Tuesday. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.
