Spartans softball team loses, hosts Tigers at 4 p.m. today

The Superior High School softball team went 1-2 in the Becker (Minn.) Tournament on Saturday.

The Spartans lost to Becker 10-0 in five innings, defeated Foley 15-8 and then fell to Simley 8-6.

Taylor Thompson and Courtney Oak pitched against Becker, and Emily Hansen had the only hit for Superior.

Alison Wainionpaa was the winning pitcher against Foley, allowing 11 hits with 11 strikeouts and one walk. Only five of the runs she allowed were earned.

Offensively for the Spartans, Jessica Lindstrom was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored; Cassy O’Neill was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI; Hansen and Kaitlyn Mergen doubled and knocked in a run; and Kari Miller singled and had an RBI.

Wainionpaa and Thompson shared pitching duties against Simley, allowing eight hits with one strikeout and seven walks.

Superior outhit Simley 15-8, led by O’Neill, who was 4-for-5 with a double. Lindstrom doubled, singled and had two RBIs; Hansen singled twice and knocked in a run; Mergen singled twice, scored two runs and knocked in two others; Kari Miller had two hits with an RBI; and Thompson, Alex Ledin and Juliana Polson each singled.

The Spartans were scheduled to host Northwestern Monday and Cloquet Tuesday. They will also be at Duluth Marshall at 4 p.m. Thursday before competing in the Hibbing Tournament Friday and Saturday.

Cloquet 17, SHS 4

The Spartans lost to the Cloquet Lumberjacks 17-4 in six innings Tuesday evening at Liebaert Field.

Chandler Beaupre was the winning pitcher and Wainionpaa suffered the loss for Superior.

Ledin tripled, doubled and knocked in two runs for Superior. O’Neill also tripled, Emily Hansen singled in a run, and Thompson and Juliana Polson singled.

The Spartans host Northwestern in a make-up game today, then play at Duluth Marshall Thursday. Both games begin at 4 p.m.
