Sheriff identifies those killed, injured in head-on collision

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department has released the identities of people involved in a head-on collision early Saturday morning.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department has released the identities of people involved in a head-on collision early Saturday morning.

Jenna D. Suomi, 25, of Duluth, a passenger in one of the vehicles, and Bernard A. Smith III of Superior, the driver of the other vehicle involved were dead at the scene of in the crash. The driver of the first vehicle, Daniel S. Nephew, 24, of Duluth was taken to Essentia Health in Duluth. The extent of his injuries was unknown.

According to the Sheriff Tom Dalbec, who issued the news release Monday, the crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department and Douglas County Medical Examiner.

The accident occurred around 1:50 a.m. Saturday at Wisconsin Highway 35 and Kunz Road in the town of Summit.
